This is a great resource for deciding or evaluating nutritional supplements. It has a wealth of good information and is easy to understand.

In the right direction, but ultimately fails Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5Average rating of 2/5
The problem with the nutritional supplement industry is that it is a deregulated island in the middle of a sea of FDA incompetence. While this is in itself a good thing, consumers are used to being protected by the arm of the Federal Government, and don't think to check for third party certification. The result is a lot of garbage: many multivitamins don't contain sufficient quantities of their ingredients, or in an very low biologically available form, or worse yet don't even match their labels. Thus there is a definite market for a book like this, but unfortunately this particular attempt fails badly, mainly owing to a lack of scholarship.

First, MacWilliams measures the nominal quantities of vitamins against the "Blended Standard", which consists of the arbitrary recommendations of a few more or less respected nutritionists. For example, if Dr. X recommends 1000mg of Vitamin C per day, what benefit will I get if take a multivitamin with 500? 50%? 90%? 10%? This could be answered by the scientific literature, but that would require a bit more work.

Second, the most important issue is the lack of regulation. MacWilliams almost completely punts on this: they identified about 10 multivitamins that more or less satisfied their criteria and asked them to provide proof from a few regulatory agencies. Those that did were awarded the "Gold Star". Nothing was mentioned about the other 200 products.

The result is basically an advertisement for about 5 premium multivitamins, most of which cost about 2$ per day, which is rather like a car magazine which tells you the solution to your problems is to buy a Ferrari. The point is that the book does not live up to its title: it is not a comparative guide, because it only offers the "super premium" recommendation and not the "budget" recommendation and the "athlete" recommendation and so on.

SIMPLE... This is an USANA workers tool. Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5Average rating of 1/5
I know a lot of people here in mexico selling USANA and this is the book they are using to sell their products and i bought the products and they are not that good, because they have very little quantities of active ingredients. If you are an USANA Worker buy it, if not you know what to do. i reccomend ray kurzweil "fantastic voyage".

This is a must for anyone who understands the value of Nutritional supplements. You will soon see that they are not all manufactured the same and most will never deliver the health benefits you are looking for. This book will show you those who are heads above the rest.

Book Review Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5Average rating of 5/5
The information contained in this reference guide is one of the best I have seen based on the complexity of subject matter. The conclusions reached are explained in great detail and dose indeed reflect an opinion based on the research compiled by the broad list of professionals contained therein. Everyone can read the material and conduct his or her own independent research for accuracy of statements regarding the basis of conclusions reached, qualifications of listed personnel, as well as any other facet of the subject matter. A careful look at the conclusions will clearly reveal manufactures that produce some very good products. This book clearly presents the reasons why they have adopted what is known as "the blended standard" so obviously any company, (and there are more than a few) that meet and or exceed these standards and do well in this particular guide. Where a comparison is made and a standard is used there is always some bias and rightly so as this is a representation of specific views held at a particular time by a specific group of published professionals with the existing knowledge at the time of publishing. We are making many discoveries regarding these issues and as a result views and positions will no doubt change but at present this represents a very good effort at getting to the facts of the benefits of improving our views on health. For those familiar with the previous edition it is clear that the publisher has raised the bar considerably in determining a very reasonable method in separating one product from another regardless if one agrees with the premise. It is always up to the consumer to look past any perceived bias to make an informed decision. This book is educational, informative and is relatively easily understood by lay people as well as professionals. I applaud Mr. Lyle MacWilliams in this effort.
